Rural Electrification Administration
- (REA)Created within the Department of the Interior by executive order on 11 May 1935, the REA was funded with $40 million a year for 10 years to assist states and farm cooperatives in bringing electric power to rural areas. By 1939, 417 cooperatives and almost 300,000 farms had received electric power. In 1939, the REA was transferred to the Department of Agriculture. By 1951, more than $2.35 billion had been loaned, and electric lines had been laid to supply 3.5 million consumers.See also Agriculture.
