Social Democratic Federation

(SDF)
The SDF was formed in 1936 by individuals disgruntled with the leadership of the Socialist Party of America. Led by Jasper McLevy, the socialist mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1933 to 1957, and Algernon Lee, president of the Rand School of Social Science in New York City, the SDF called for a broad liberal-left third party but with little success. The SDF eventually merged back into the Socialist Party in 1956.
