War Refugee Board

(WRB)
The WRB was created in January 1944 at the behest of Henry Morgenthau Jr. to organize the rescue of racial and religious victims of Nazi persecution and seek the assistance of public and private bodies in the rescue, transportation, and care of refugees. Working with neutral countries, the board helped to effect the movement of refugees to Palestine, Spain, Portugal, and Norway, and it also established a camp for 1,000 Italians in Oswego, New York. It was believed that the WRB had helped save some 200,000 refugees before it was abolished in September 1945.
